Motel 6 and a full bottle of fine bourbon giving us a well deserved break on this mini adventure in to AZ's wonderful countryside and strange small towns. It is day 1 and I have seen some pretty amazing stuff. Already thinking of coming back to film the strange towns and their inhabitants off the beaten track on route to Phoenix. The bland beauty I find fascinating seems to be the running theme and finding that seems to be easy. Plentiful sparse concrete suburbs surrounded by dust and horizon. Just hold off on the rain please.

‘Edward The Confessor’

A short film by BretonLABS & Niall O’Brien

Visual experimentalists Breton have released a powerful and emotive short film for their forthcoming debut single ‘Edward TheConfessor’, due for release on Fat Cat Records on 21^st November 2011.

The track's lyrics are based on a field recording of a conversation taking place between two unknown men, the subject matter of which is immigration and the frustration of surviving in a foreign country.

It’s a similar frustration that’s echoed in the young faces of the disaffected youths featured in photographer and film-maker Niall O'Brien's recent 'Anger' exhibition -

four kids on a council estate in London, shot at 1000 frames per second and capturing anger in its most undiluted form.

These affecting images, interspersed throughout the video, sit somewhere between photography and moving image, contrasting with Breton's frenetic and indefinable music, yet somehow expressing the same helpless anger of the lyrics.

The result is an exciting and visually captivating piece of work – the beauty, clarity and preciseness of Niall’s photography highlighted by the deliberate hazy lo-fi vibe of Breton’s live performance.

Niall will be exhibiting the ‘Anger’ installation in London next spring.

Breton’s debut album ‘Other People’s Problems’ will be released in March 2012.

Abe's Penny - The Coming Insurrection

Francesca Gavin and I have collaborated together on an art project for Abe's Penny who have produced postcards from a series of photographs I took in an anarchist commune in Tarnac, France this year. The commune story was written by Huw Nesbitt for Dazed and Confused. We worked 8 hours bailing hay and moving a couple tone of metal before they allowed me to take a few snaps, of a field... Luckily finding a dead fox with a bullet in his mouth made it all worth while.

Say It, I'm Not Angry Anymore - ANGER

I guess it is something which I might have foreseen... Maybe, not really sure as the only thing I can think about happened after I shot this piece last summer. While still going trough the vigorous post production and sound design stages I'm feeling pretty nervous about my first attempt to exhibit a video and sound installation. Ireland seems to be the perfect place as the Photo Ireland Festival is taking off and growing bigger each year. Thanks to Block T Gallery this is all coming together.

Shot the day before I flew to North West America on a separate month long protect, we worked hard for all the shots. Filmed at 2000 fps I wanted to capture the emotion so quick and short while relaying it as a still prolonged moment of this dramatic act. Thanks to Street Beers, I had a late night education about an old influence. It brought me back to doodling on my copy book at the back of the class being ignored by my teachers. Trying to perfect the iconic symbol that was the Wu logo. I was obsessed, I needed to know everything about them. How many were members, what their names were. Eventually I listened to the 36 chambers so much I could tell you who was rapping just by their voice even if it was a brand new song or interview. They changed hip hop massively back then and now I know even more. Look at this doc. Amazing and very sad too. Loss of life and gaining respect once more.

I saw a girl get knocked down today and as I raged at the driver and helped her off the ground I started to think a million miles an hour about things and how things don't really matter unless someone looses an arm or dies. Get over it.

Take this chap. Fuck me what a legend. Nothing to complain about, nothing to worry about except a fire or wood worm but his varnished exterior prevents that. He helped me shoot one of the next big things to come out of England and in fact lives in their lab, Breton you lads are in for a future treat. Keep up the hard work.

As I get called back to the motherland to show some new work I think of how much things progressed since I left. I also feel grateful as I still refer to the motherland as being the first place I was inspired and realised what was out there past the Ocean and rolling hills (it has taken me a while to realise how important). No matter what I say Ireland has played the biggest part in my adventure and I touch on the nostalgic moments far too often to let it go unnoticed and unregarded. Good work or not, I want to show her what I have learned and how I have grown into something even I couldn't mold by my self. The natural development of a grown mans aesthetic and point of view that has changed allot over the 6 (ish) years baffles me again and again.

If only my spelling had improved, thank goodness for spell check.

Perfect mantra on a day like today. Stuck indoors for a small bit while getting stuff done doesn't mean the L.A. weather isn't making me happy. Sun shining and good people all around, I felt a mantra was in order. Allot of fun to be had here but also an inspiring place to bring back some ideas to London. Thinking of a treatment for a video that means allot to me at the moment. Emotion and felling are rife in the song I need to make the visuals for. I find it hard as I know it needs to come from the heart and also from the soul.... I return to the question of weather it is important to make this up or speak from inside. Making Personal Geographies - David Farrell

There is always one person you remember in your college years. The one pillar that you looked up to and constantly went to for advise. David Farrell was not only a great educator to me, but he also was and is an inspiring artist. Extremely respected, his work is insightful and beautiful. Touching on some dark subjects he manages to use the medium to an exact skill while being able to fill books with his ideas and concepts.

Research his work, he is one of the few true concept driven photographers who can think and execute great images.

*David Farrell was born in Dublin (1961), read Chemistry at UCD graduating with a Ph.D. in 1987. Currently working as a lecturer in photography in IADT-Dun Laoghaire. He has worked independently and on communion projects with Gogo della Luna (Gudòk). Received the European Publishers Award for Photography in 2001 for Innocent Landscapes and in 2004 participated in the European Eyes on Japan project. Crow, his collaborative multimedia film with composer Benjamin Dwyer, was premiered during the Composers Choice Festival at the National Concert Hall Dublin in 2005. He has exhibited internationally including Houston FotoFest 2006, on three occasions at the Festival Internazionale di Fotografia, Rome and more recently in Pinyang Festival of Photography in China in 2008.

His second publication, Nè vicino Nè lontano. A Lugo (Punctum -Autumn 2007) was a result of a residency project curated by Luca Nostri in Lugo in the North of Italy. David Farrell - Elusive Moments a documentary by Donald Taylor Black (Poolbeg Productions) was premiered at the Cork Film Festival 2008 and was broadcast on Irish Television as part of The Look of the Irish series on Irish photography. Since September 2009 he has been documenting his revisits to the sites of Innocent Landscapes and the ongoing renewed searches at some of these locations for those disappeared during the conflict in Northern Ireland at www.source.ie/blog.

His book Innocent Landscapes was published by Dewi Lewis in 2001.

"Porn Hurts Everyone"

Driving 6000 miles in three weeks isn’t an incredibly easy trip, even when planned two years in advance. We slept in tents and spent 70% of the time in the cab of the oversized truck we borrowed from fellow traveler Ed Pecis (James’s Dad, who resides in Weed, California). Regardless, we were always smiling and had one of the best adventures of our lives. I guess this project was a selfish exploration and introduction to a continent I love so dearly but didn’t really know. Before leaving I knew I wanted to find something to concentrate on and document – Christianity was one and the other was the bonding father and son, Ed and James, were taking on after the death of Ed’s father a year previously. Subtly touching on both, by way of it being there all the time, the photos took a course of their own due to the organic approach we took to the adventure.
The trip is about freedom in an isolated America. The idea of summer breaks, drinking beers, diving off rocks by small towns was everything I had hoped for. I got to meet a lot of different kids at campsites, riverbanks and in fairs from California to Idaho. Without using any form of itinerary other than a rough direction and what Ed recommended, anything discovered along the way seemed to be a bonus and intrigued me even more. The feeling of luck when meeting an interesting group of kids or random preacher who just happened to be there at the same time was second to none. Serendipity was a word thrown around a lot. The Christian element isn’t obvious in the work but it was constantly there, not always visual. In a way everything reverted to the fear of God and almost everything was labeled Christian, from all the bands in the Boise state fair to the 'Porn Hurts Everyone' sign in the yard opposite an adult store in Newport, California. Completely observational and not at all critical, I realised the importance of belief and opinion in small towns and rural America. There are some influenced opinions in USA for sure, but the people I came across were inspiring and craved to know about us and from where we had come. Their lust for information outside of the United States was intense, I just hope they get to do what they dream of. We just did.

James Pecis And The Hard Graft That Is Hair

The man put up with me for 3 weeks in the most epic journey in and around North West America with no mention of work. I know he is big time, but never knew how much work is involved. James Pecis is one of the busiest guys in his medium and most definitely one of the best. He creates with ease and the fact he compares well to a guru, he manages to capture the hearts of everyone who encounter him.

James is an artist and when he has two seconds to him self he makes perfect little art books and his Christmas cards are second to none. Massive gun collections and bathing in baths full of fruit are common place with in his quirky slightly strange mind.

This video shows us how much fun he and his team can have on an incredably complex and hectic journey over Fashion month. Planes, trains and automobiles ensue his life, he loves it and makes it fun for everyone.

There was a night, near the end, when I had plucked one last wilted beer from the leaking old ice chest, and wandered over to a lone picnic table. It was in the Eastern Oregon desert and we had decided to spend the night sleeping under the fiery starlight, in a field that felt like an ancient ritual ground, if you overlooked the RV park that had tastefully settled on it’s perimeter.

The sky was lavender and silver, all streaked out to-gether, those two, and O this ungodly warm wind was blowing the sun away, wrapping itself all over our road-seasoned skin, it felt holy in the strangest sense. I felt like my soul was going to shrapnel itself out of it’s shell, so I left the boys at the fire and made my way through the brown grass to this Table. It looked exactly like an altar, to me. I laid down on it and let the previous two weeks fill up my casing, really let them flood the space, and as I did this I looked up and there was the moon, hanging a few inches from my nose, had appeared as though summoned. It was the most benevolent moon I’d ever lain under, it felt like all the strong and true parts of life in one moonrise. It shepherded me through my processing of topics like being in love with all 3 of my motley-crew camping troupe members, reflecting on the baby coyote voice that was pealing in and out in the smoky air, wondering if I ever actually needed to put on a clean pair of jeans again, these smelled liked campfire and gas station coffee and boys and the ocean, and teenage hearts at the river in Nampa. This, along with the warm stout I had half-finished, inspired a song (undoubtedly a feat of composition) which I decided to perform for my all-loving moon. She did not judge, as to be expected, and I swung my heels happily the whole time. That night I dreamed of a world-sized water park, where each of us had our own tidal wave and the wave never broke.

We finished our expedition the next day and it fractured each of our hearts, just a few cracks each, nothing deadly but we felt it like kittens when the milk runs out. For a few weeks we were buoyant souls, free to point on a map and just GO, no rules except never run out of whiskey and maybe have something in mind for dinner before you get there. Beautiful kids making out in parking lots and wandering on dirt roads in the middle of nowhere became our answer to everything, our living examples of perfection, a league of adolescent Buddhas, and we followed them for hours with our eyes and feet, feeling grateful and like we wanted to learn everything we could from them before they went home to their invisible parents.

This was the Niall O’Brien-led road expedition into the great small-town American young-wonderlands. Alexander McQueen had hired Niall to shoot their collection as he saw fit, in this setting, (my job was to communicate with the teenagers) and so we rode in this pickup truck for days and days and we found ourselves falling into a very beautiful crevice in which time stops, all light is gold-hued and bees buzz extra loud. The picnic table was my resting place so many times, and thank god somehow this characteristically strange truth worked it’s way into the photo-tale.

Niall leaves melted minds and hearts in his wake, his reverence for his subject is unrivaled, his hands and heart are blessed and gilded and we’ll only see more and more of his blessing, in our collective human future, and for this we can rest gratefully.

Loving the thrill of the chase at the moment and as it makes my head clear and at the same time relaxed or at least at ease and confident, I cant help but feel energized and inspired again. I expect the excitement is close to the experience you get on a roller coaster. I've never been on one but the idea of pure fun, excitement and fear sums up these days. Suddenly things make sense and all the bollox that might have been negative in any way seem to be working out as the best thing in the world. The new company I keep has driven me 10 fold and I no longer feel guilty for working hard. Contemplating change isn't on the cards for me, I don't want to as it seems to have gotten me this far and I'm still alive.

Sort of like the Frieze Art Fair in West London, but way cooler and more angular haircuts to look at. Diamond encrusted skulls will be replaced with contemporary doodles, dark disturbing films and out of focus photography. Levis jeans will be sponsoring the event so we better be getting a new pair of kacks.

The indisputable king of the illustrated, humorous drawing is finally pulling the finger out and giving the public what they want. A solo show by the master pen pusher and Bare Bones founder Harry Malt will be shown in the Print House Gallery, Ashwin Street, London E8 3DL, from the 10th of February.

Malt has been pushing many pens in all different colors to get each picture to perfection and the small preview I saw does not disappoint. Come up to Dalston and buy one of these master pieces before some Saatchi type gob shite turns him into an arrogant and over priced prick with a team of underpaid smaller pen pushers doing it all for him. These brand new works are 100 percent pen pushed by the man himself.

This extravagant show will be on from the 10th of February to the 7th of March. If you want to see the master fall over in a celebratory drunken stupor be there on the 10th, between 6pm and 9pm.

You got to hand it to bands that push it in their videos. Iv been doing allot of research for a new video iv been asked to direct and I keep coming back to kids running around fighting boredom. Taking photos is great to seep into the lives of others in an inconspicuous way, one man one camera, but when it comes to film and crew, how do you make something believable? How can you be a fly on the wall when there are 20 flies in the room? Ill figure this one out.

A slight sense of excitement as I look back at Christmas night. My two old friends a bottle of Jagermeister and a hand full of Psilocybin loaded treats. We had an epic journey that should have taken us 15 minutes but 3 hours later we were only half way there. Rat Catcher is a historic piece of work, and to have made it so young and so fresh with the sensibility of a fine artist makes me push harder and dig deeper into what I can achieve in my own work. It isn't easy that is for sure but pushing forward and sticking to your guns is the only way. Longevity is the goal.

Coming down after a heavy one of nigh of 3 parties and good people, I need to reboot with the memory of Gaspar Noe's Enter the void. Probably not the right flick to watch when the head is in a spin but you must marvel at his capability to cause wonder in his technique. How does he do it? How is it shot? and how the hell does he get away with it? Enter the void is history, it is a film I'm not sure I love but I respect.

I know what that feels like, only last night after a good feed, bottle of wine and fine company I had the strangest dream that I needed to escape from something and my only means was to shout for help, nothing, nothing came out and the frustration ensued.
